A Student of Donetsk National University Wins the Contest of Literary Translation in St. Petersburg

19.03.19

Master’s-level student of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Donetsk National University Elena Vishnevskaya became the winner of the novice translator contest in St. Petersburg. Elena was recognized as the best in the category “Translation of the English-language Prose,” which traditionally is the most competitive.

The translation contest is held in support of the project “Reading St. Petersburg: we choose the best foreign writer”, initiated in 2009 by Mayakovsky Central City Public Library. It has been intended to attract the attention of the readers of St. Petersburg to the world literary heritage and the works of the best modern foreign writers.

The award ceremony was held during the annual open conference of the project. It was attended by Alexander Voronko, the First Deputy Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for Culture; Zoya Chalova, the director of Mayakovsky Central City Public Library; representatives of the Consulates General of Hungary, Lithuania, Norway, Republic of Serbia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan, as well as representatives of foreign libraries, institutes and centers of culture, association of English language teachers SPELTA, in total about 800 people.

“An ignorant person might think that the profession of a translator is routine and boring, but in fact, translation is art. This is particularly true for the literary translation. After all, the ability to listen to the speech of another person, understand his word and be able to convey it is a complex spiritual and intellectual process. My victory in this contest is owing to the work of my teachers: Olga Viktorovna Matvienko, Alla Gennadievna Udinskaya, Irina Mikhailovna Podgayskaya. Of course, there’s still a lot of work, but this contest has opened up new horizons and new incentives for me. And the charm of the event and the beauties of the North Palmyra will remain with me forever,” Elena Vishnevskaya shared her impressions.
