Vasily Sorokin (1901-1977) was the outstanding scientist-metallurgist, professor, the head of subdepartment "Cast iron metallurgy" of Donetsk industrial and Donetsk polytechnical institutes (nowadays DONNTU) in 1947 - 1977.

The Minister of Education and Science of the DPR Larisa Polyakova, the deputy  Minister of Industry and Trade Alexey Granovsky, chairman of Committee for Education, Science and Culture of National Council Miroslav Rudenko, head of the press center of Education and Science Employees Union Evgeny Lapenko, Vasily Sorokin's relatives participated in the festive event.

"Vasily Sorokin is the world famous scientist-metallurgist, the founder of school of sciences whose cause lives on, and so shall be, it corresponds to our mentality and our attitude. Such solemn moments is a part of our history. Today we are having an important event because we develop an education system and sciences on traditions, taking into account historic facts and professor Sorokin is a sign figure, an example for all students, young scientists who  showed with all his life how it is necessary to work for the welfare of the country", - Larisa Polyakova noted.

"Professor Sorokin worked in our higher education institution for 30 years, was the vice rector for scientific work, - the rector of DONNTU Konstantin Marenich noted. - With his techniques cast iron production  is now performed almost around the world, he is the author of the advanced methods of pig-iron and foundry production. Upon his projects and with his participation in the heaviest years of the Great Patriotic War, in 1942, on Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works the most productive blast furnace was open. He is also the author of the first domain production automation systems realized at Azovstal iron and steel works. Vasily Sorokin generously imparted experience with the pupils. We open a memorial board in the year of the 115 anniversary since the birth of the scientist, and I am sure that our youth will remember those who made a worthy contribution to engineering development".
